The Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew who resides in Istanbul, left the country only hours before the military coup in Turkey. He left with one of the last flights from Attaturk Airport in Istanbul.
However, Metropolitan Arsenios of Austria said that Patriarch did not leave Istanbul in a rush but he left on a piligrimage to Slovenia. Metropolitan Arsenios claims that all these were a pure coincidence.
Nevertheless the German press explains these events in a different way. The Patriarch who was close friend of Fetulah Gulen, whom the Turkish authorities suspect of organizing the unsuccessful coup and suspecting that Patriarch Bartholomew was informed on upcoming coup. In near future Patriarch Bartholomew does not want to return to Istanbul and will spend a vacation in Slovenia.
